Celebrating WWE’s 20th Anniversary!
It’s hard to fit 20 years worth of wild women wanderings into one room, but somehow we managed to squeeze two decades of the baddest girls in the outdoor adventure biz into the hottest party of the season: the Wild Women Expedition’s 20th anniversary cabaret/members reunion party!
On Nov 27 2010, our celebration began with a Wild Women first: the screening of “Does This Canoe Make Me Look Fat?”, a hilarious and touching film by Beth Mairs. As the laughter died and the lights brightened the cozy back room of the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, old friends ran to greet each other, giggling at photos of themselves from WWE trips of yesteryear, while new friends bonded over drinks and decadent treats.
Our dynamic MC’s Jane Luk and Anne Simmonds kept the tempo up while the myriad of irreverent acts kept the wild vibe alive throughout the evening, with incredible performances from a mishmash of some of Canada’s hottest artists, including hula-hoop burlesque sensation Olive-or-Oliver, comedienne Diane Flacks, musical talents of ROAM and performance artists Ina Unt Ina, while visual artist Kyra Dahlke’s painting exhibit of swirling vortex of colour and texture transformed the walls into a wild montage of their own.
As DJ Betty Ann readied to kick the dance party into high gear, we paused for a moment, paying collective homage to 20 years of foxy, fearless females. And with great respect to our epic herstory, we move boldly towards the next 20 years — thank you all, and see you outside!
